I don't think it is. I mean, I guess it could be, but I just always assumed it was a nickname because to me it sounds like one. So when I heard in a movie that Nell was short for Elinore, I thought, maybe thats it! I used to not like the name but one of my neighbors named her daughter Eleanor and since then I've started to think it's a pretty cute name, and very classic.
